2.3. Yajur Veda

The Yajur Veda is another one of the four Vedas, the sacred texts of Hinduism.  The Yajur Veda (“Worship Knowledge” or “Ritual Knowledge”) consists of recitations, ritual worship formulas, mantras, and chants directly involved in worship services. It is a collection of rituals and mantras that were used during Vedic sacrifices, and is believed to have been composed around 1200 BCE.

The Yajur Veda is unique in that it contains both prose and verse(kavita) sections, and is considered to be the most practical of the four Vedas, as it contains detailed instructions for the performance of Vedic rituals. The mantras and rituals of the Yajur Veda were intended to help the individual connect with the divine and achieve spiritual goals, and are still used in Hindu rituals today.

The Yajurveda consists of prose and verse sections, with a total of 1,875 verses. 

The Yajur Veda is divided into two main branches

1. The Shukla Yajur veda: This part consists of prayers and mantras in the form of poetry /verse(kavita) and is also known as the "White Yajur veda." that are recited during the Vedic sacrifices,, 

It primarily deals with the performance of rituals and sacrifices.

2. The Krishna Yajur veda: This part contains both prose and verse(kavita) sections  in the form of prose and is also known as the "Black Yajur veda." It provides a more detailed explanation of the rituals and their significance.it contains commentary on the mantras and instructions for their use.

The Krishna Yajur Veda is further divided into two parts: the Taittiriya Samhita and the Maitrayani Samhita. The Taittiriya Samhita contains both mantras and instructions for performing Vedic rituals, while the Maitrayani Samhita is a smaller collection of mantras and is less commonly used in Vedic rituals.

The Yajur Veda is considered to be an important text in Hinduism, as it contains detailed instructions for performing Vedic rituals and mantras that are believed to have transformative power. Overall, the Yajur Veda provides insight into the religious and ritualistic practices of the early Vedic period, and continues to be studied and revered by Hindus today.
